W. Ind. task force seeks deputies in rural schools

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A western Indiana task force wants special deputies posted in 10 rural schools in response to December's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing formed the Safe Schools Task Force after the Newtown, Conn., shooting which killed 20 first-graders and six adults.

Ewing announced the task force's proposal Tuesday to put special deputies in 10 rural schools that are part of the Vigo County School Corp. He says rural schools are at higher risk because it takes police longer to reach them.

Ewing says the proposal he'll present to the Vigo County Council would require $135,000 in county funding and a $135,000 match from the school district.

The Tribune-Star reports that district Superintendent Dan Tanoos will present the idea Monday to the school board.
