INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The $1.2 billion Weir Cook Terminal has been accepting travelers for one year now.

Airport officials say passenger traffic at the airport is down 10%. They blame the economy.

They opened their doors on November 11, 2008. Since then the Airport Authority has raised parking rates, cut jobs and enforced salary freezes for workers.

Also, revenue is $15 million shy of projections. Earlier this year the airport offered rent relief to the retailers in the airport who are struggling to stay afloat.

That will end at the end of 2009. “And as the economy begins to pick up, we believe that traffic will pick up again,” said Airport Executive Director John Clark.

In the meantime, airport officials said they are working on ways to make the airport more marketable.

They say they would like to see more non-stop flights going west to cities like San Diego and San Francisco.
