INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The $1.2 billion Weir Cook Terminal has been accepting travelers
for one year now.
Airport officials say passenger traffic at the airport is
down 10%. They blame the economy.
They opened their doors on November 11, 2008. Since then the
Airport Authority has raised parking rates, cut jobs and enforced
salary freezes for workers.
Also, revenue is $15 million shy of projections. Earlier this
year the airport offered rent relief to the retailers in the
airport who are struggling to stay afloat.
That will end at the end of 2009. “And as the economy
begins to pick up, we believe that traffic will pick up
again,” said Airport Executive Director John Clark.
In the meantime, airport officials said they are working on
ways to make the airport more marketable.
They say they would like to see more non-stop flights going
west to cities like San Diego and San Francisco.
