A 12-year old boy died while playing in a soccer tournament in Bargersville Saturday. The coroner's office said emergency personnel tried to save the young boy but he died at the hospital from an underlying heart problem.
Flags flew at half staff Sunday to remember a 12-year-old boy who died while playing soccer at the Center Grove Soccer Club field in Bargersville.
Johnson County Coroner David Lutz said Christopher Akunda collapsed on the field during a tournament game Saturday.
"When our people arrived he did appear to be breathing and he was transported by rural metro to Johnson Memorial hospital for further care," explained Captain Jason Ramey with the Bargersville Community Fire department.
Unfortunately the boy died at the hospital, despite the medical staffs best efforts.
Lutz says the boy had a hereditary heart problem. He said the family was unaware of his condition and it's a tragic situation that no one could have prevented.
The Bargersville Community Fire department is stationed at the complex to respond in seconds to any problem.
"If anything happens we have radio communications with the other staff, referees with the office here. They will notify us in the field and then we'll respond and contact an outside ambulance to come in and transport if needed," Captain Ramey said.
Parents and players found out about the heartbreaking news at the tournament.
"As a mom, my stomach, I was very ill. I had to sit down," soccer mom Lisa McGee said.
The coroner's office said the boy lived in Fishers.
He was playing in the Coca Cola Classic Soccer Tournament.
