Clermont, Ind. (WISH) - A 13-year old boy dead and his mother is recovering at Wishard Hospital after a mobile home fire in Clermont.
It happened in the 100 block of South Raceway Road Saturday morning. A neighbor tried to rescue the boy who was trapped.
"Traditionally mobile homes, they do burn hot and they do burn fast," said Lt. Ryan Miller with the Brownsburg Fire department.
That's what Brownsburg fire investigators say happened to this mobile home in Clermont Mobile Home Park.
Just before 8 o'clock Saturday morning the mobile home went up in flames with three people, including a boy inside.
"I looked out the window and I seen flames and it just blew up," neighbor Michael Huber said.
Investigators say the adults managed to escape the fire.
"One of the neighbors tried to make entry into the home possibly to rescue the child," Lt. Miller explained.
Investigators say a neighbor called 911.
When firefighters arrived, getting to the fire was a little difficult. They say the nearest fire hydrant was 1,000 feet away.
"We did have a significant lay of hose to get back here, I'm going to estimate 1,000 feet maybe a little bit more," Lt. Miller said.
Wayne Township and Avon Fire crews assisted Brownsburg to help put out the fire. Investigators say this is the first fatal fire the department has worked in more than a decade.
This is something we don't deal with on a regular basis so this is something we as a department make sure we take care of our own crews," said Lt. Miller.
Michael Huber has lived in the community for about a year. He said he is shocked this happened so close to home, "I really feel for the dad because tomorrow is Father's Day and he just lost his son and it's going to be a burden on him for the rest of his life. It's going to be a hard day for him."
Investigators haven't released the names of the victims and say right now they can not pin-point a cause of the fire. They are not sure if there were any working smoke detectors inside the mobile home.
