INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Marion County prosecutor filed criminal charges Friday
against the owner of a pair of pit bulls that attacked an elderly
woman.
Meanwhile, the victim Brenda Hill continues to recover at
Wishard Hospital. She briefly left the intensive care unit Friday
to speak with 24-Hour News 8.
Hill entered the room in a wheelchair, her legs too frail to
hold her after she said her neighbor's dogs mauled them. The attack
happened on Sunday when Hill was putting her trash in the alley
beside her home.
"Came from behind my house attacked me on my legs and pulled
me off of the porch and just started gnawing back and forth on my
arms and my legs," said Hill.
She said the attack was savage, unrelenting, and unprovoked.
She knew the situation was grave when she saw how much blood she
was losing.
"That's what really really scared me cause I'm on blood
thinner and I seen all the blood on the ground and I said oh Jesus
just help me," said Hill.
The 68-year-old grandmother of 8, great-grandmother of 4
prides herself on the fact she lives independently. But now, she
wonders whether she can ever live alone again.
"I just want to be able to do for myself and don't have to
live in fear. And I can't live there. I don't think I'll be able to
live there," said Hill.
The owner of the dogs, Lee Carroll now faces charges, the
most serious carries a maximum of a year in jail.
Her son says that's not enough.
"The city of Indianapolis needs to stop dragging its feet and
do something about this for him to receive some type of
punishment," said Gregory Gilbert, victim's son.
Carroll is also charged with two counts of failing to
immunize his dogs, a class b misdemeanor and two counts of failing
to restrain his dogs which led to the attack, which is a class a
misdemeanor.
