HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - An accident involving a semi and a car has shut down Interstate 74 eastbound lanes Sunday evening near the exit for Brownsburg.

Dispatchers in Hendricks County say the accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. and involved a semi truck and a vehicle.

A passenger car was heading eastbound on I-74 in the right lane when a semi truck went to pass the vehicle on the left side.

The female driver of the semi says her tire blew, causing her trailer to veer off toward the passenger car.

The vehicle spun out and hit the middle guardrail on the interstate. The male driver, who is from Franklin, was ejected. The Brownsburg Police Department say he was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the semi was taken to the hospital with no injuries.

The Indiana Department of Transportation alerted travelers that the accident happened at the 66 mile marker in the eastbound lanes. This is near the exit for Brownsburg on I-74.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be involved in the accident. There were slick spots on the road but that does not appear to have played a role.

After being closed for hours, all lanes were reopened shortly after 10 p.m.
