SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - The Shelbyville Police Department said Tuesday afternoon an arrest had been made in the killing of Genevieve Kelly.
William Goode, 35, was arrested Monday night, with SWAT officers involved, Shelbyville police said. Court documents said Kelly was stabbed several times, and that Goode was found with a stab wound to his right leg.
Goode rented an apartment from Kelly, court documents said, and was supposed to pay rent at Kelly's house at about the time that the killing occurred. The probable cause affidavit says Goode pawned several items, including silverware, coins and pocket watches, after the time of the killing.
Police said more items stolen from Kelly's home were found at Goode's home at the time of his arrest. Detectives also found bloody clothes as well as a large knife with blood on it in Goode's bedroom.
Goode now faces preliminary charges of murder, receiving stolen property, burglary resulting in serious bodily injury, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, theft, and being a habitual offender.
According to court documents, Goode denied killing Kelly.
Police discovered Kelly’s body late Friday afternoon after a relative discovered her home on Mechanic Street had been ransacked and called 911.
On Tuesday, the Shelby County coroner ruled the 74-year-old’s death a homicide .
Goode has a lengthy criminal background, but largely not a violent past. The charges we found all stem from cases in Shelby County, and the majority of the charges deal with theft or burglary. He spent about two years in prison more than a decade ago for burglary. But before that and since then, he's been in and out of the court system and jails.
