FORTVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Dash cam video shows a gun-toting criminal shooting Fortville Police Officer Matt Fox.
Bullets hit Officer Fox in his chest, arm and head Saturday morning. Police say a bullet proof vest and tinted windows played a role in Fox's survival.
Initially, flowers and balloons weren't allowed in the hospital room where Fox recovered because his wounds were so severe. When members of the The Fortville Action Inc. heard, they wanted to do something special to show their support.
Thursday, friends, strangers and Fox's K-9 posed for a group photo at Memorial Park. Organizer Tammy Gilbert said the photo would be printed, framed and delivered to Fox. It was a unique way to show the injured officer the community cares.
Photographer Jamie Owens of J. Scott Photography captured the image free of charge.
"If this is my gift, photography, I want to give it," Owens said.
Fox's partner and friend, Sgt. Michael Fuller said Fox started rehab and is recovering well.
He likened Fox to the Energizer Bunny.
"That's what we call him. He just goes and goes," Fuller said, adding Fox is eager to return to work.
"He keeps calling to check on us and we are supposed to be checking on him," Fuller said. "He is in good spirits. We keep telling him to take his time but he says he will be back soon."
Thursday's group photo was one of several events the community has planned to help Fox get back on his feet. The Fortville Police Department is selling a decal for $5 to help Fox's family with medical expenses.
Wednesday between 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Mozzi's Pizza in Greenfield Indiana will donate 50-percent of its proceeds to Fox.
The Cumberland Police Department is also helping. A 5K run and walk planned for August 18 will now help benefit the officer. Half of the proceeds will be donated to Fox and his family. Fox, who has a three-year-old daughter, is recovering at a local rehab facility.
Meanwhile, the 5K starts on the Pensy Trail August 18 at 8:00 a.m. To register contact Paula Bergfeld at Paulabergfeld@gmail.com
