Cops: Babysitter burned girl as penalty

RICHMOND, Ind. (WISH) - Burns on a 7-year-old's feet led police to arrest a babysitter in Richmond on Wednesday night, Richmond Police officials said.

Babysitter Robert Kendall was arrested on felony neglect and battery charges.

Medical officials in Richmond found bruises on the girl, along with second degree burns to her feet, police said. A doctor said the burns were consistent with her feet being dipped in a hot liquid.

Officers said Kendall admitted he held the girl in scalding water as a form of punishment. Police said the girl's father and 3-year-old brother were also in the apartment at the time.

The girl is being treated in the burn unit at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

Police said Thursday morning the case was still under investigation and a second arrest was possible.

Neighbors were saddened and dismayed by what happened.

"Kids from time to time are a handful, but never would that cross your mind to do anything like that to a little child who is defenseless and can't help themselves. It's just terrible," said Travis Marquis.

Child Protective Services took custody of the girl and her 3-year-old brother. The Richmond Police Department is putting together an Easter basket for the little girl.
