Court calls for new trial in '96 murder

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - After being sentenced to 60 years in prison for the death of her 3-year-old son, a court has ordered a new trial for a Greensburg mom.

The Indiana Court of Appeals reversed the lower court’s conviction of Kristine Bunch, who was convicted in 1996 of murder. Her 3-year-old son Anthony died in a June 1995 mobile home fire.

The overturned conviction centers on two key pieces of evidence in the trial. Bunch’s attorneys argued the trial courts acted incorrectly by not considering the evidence as “newly discovered.” The appeals court agreed and said the two errors warrant a new trial.

Bunch told police she awoke to flames in her home and tried to extinguish it and rescue her son. Ultimately, she said she had to leave and call for help.
