ST. PAUL, Ind. (WISH) - The Decatur County Coroner confirmed that a 14-year-old boy died after being pulled from a quarry at a southern Indiana Campground.
According to DNR, DuJuan Thompson was last seen in the water at the Hidden Paradise Campgrounds in St. Paul, Indiana.
Thompson's football team from Harshman Magnet Middle School had just won a national championship Saturday night and was visiting the Campground to celebrate.
The adults with the group made all the kids line up in order to size them for life jackets, which they had made mandatory for the group, but a few snuck off to go swim.
Witnesses at the scene told police that they teen jumped into the water yelling "I can swim" and then started coughing and went under the water.
A 15-year-old tried to reach in and hold onto Thompson, but he went straight down into the water, according to DNR.
The group called 911 and DNR dive teams started to search the water immediately upon arrival.
They had three dive teams search using a buoy system. The third time around they located the teen in 19 ft. of water.
The Decatur County Coroner pronounced Thompson dead at the scene.
The investigation is on-going and the exact cause of death will be determined once the autopsy has been performed.
The campground does not use a lifeguard, but rather has what they call a water watchman system who monitor the water. Attendees are required to sign a release form before swimming, according to DNR.
Thompson's Principal says he was involved in track, football, basketball, and wrestling.
The school will be wrapping the walls in green and white to remember Thompson. Green was Thompson's favorite color.
Thompson was supposed to attend Arsenal Tech High School in the fall.
Grief counselors and coaches will be available to help those students in need.
Monday, the school will be hosting a service honoring Harshman Magnet Middle School as an end of the year celebration. They will also take a moment to remember Thompson.
