SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Firefighters were battling a large fire at the Shelby County Fairgrounds during the overnight hours.

The fire occurred at 500 Frank Street in Shelbyville. The Shelbyville Sheriff’s Department confirmed the fire, which started around 1 a.m. and was extinguished about an hour later.

The structure was over 160 years old and is considered the oldest grand stand in Indiana, according to historians. It was built during the civil war.

The grand stands are a total loss.

Firefighters had the fire contained in about an hour after a slight delay due to not having hydrants.

Several viewers tell 24-Hour News 8 they could see the smoke and fire from at least a mile away.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
