Horsemen thrilled by planned changes to 2 tracks

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A proposal to give Indiana's two horse racing tracks their own type of racing could boost revenue and interest in the struggling industry.
Hoosier Park owner Centaur Holdings is in the process of acquiring the Indiana Grand Casino and Downs in Shelbyville. The plan has the approval of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission and awaits regulators' input.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reports Centaur hopes to shift all thoroughbred racing to Indiana Downs and all standardbred harness racing to Hoosier Park in Anderson this spring if regulators grant approval by March 1.
Indiana horsemen say it's the best opportunity to enhance racing since lawmakers allowed slot machines at the tracks in 2007.
Statewide wagering on horse racing fell to $125 million in 2011. That's the lowest level since 1995.
