MORRISTOWN, Ind. (WISH) - Heat may be to blame for Wednesday's train derailment in Shelby County.
CSX says while the accident is under investigation, investigators will look into the possibility that the recent hot weather caused a rail to bend or buckle.
The rail bridge that collapsed in Wednesday evening's derailment is one of more than 700 rail bridges in Indiana owned by CSX.
According to the company’s website, CSX operates and maintains more than 2700 miles of track, and more than 2900 public and private grade crossings.
The Federal Railroad Administration says the responsibility for bridge safety rests with the owner of the track. According to the administration, railroad bridge owners should perform periodic bridge inspections at least annually but more frequent inspections may be appropriate based on the condition of the bridge and the volume of rail traffic.
24-Hour News 8 has requested inspection information from CSX concerning the bridge and rail line that was damaged in Shelby County.
