RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) - Utility officials are blaming two lightning strikes for knocking out power to about 80 percent of an eastern Indiana city.

Richmond Power & Light says some 17,000 of the city's homes and businesses lost electrical service for about 70 minutes beginning about 8:20 a.m. Thursday.

The utility tells the Palladium-Item that lightning hit a 69,000-volt transmission line, knocking out 11 substations. Power to the downtown area went out, along Richmond High School and the Indiana University East and Ivy Tech Community College campuses.

Officials say the lightning strike caused no injuries, fire or equipment damage.
