SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - A Shelbyville man was trapped overnight hanging upside down inside his overturned car in the middle of a field, 24-Hour News 8 news partner the Shelbyville News reports.
Andrew Foster, Shelbyville, ran off the road late Wednesday night in eastern Shelbyville, rolling his vehicle into a nearby field, emergency officials told the newspaper. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck, and Foster was unable to call 911.
Lt. Jeff Tennell of the Shelbyville Fire Department said the car was so far out in the field that no one else saw it in the dark. Foster was trapped inside for more than seven hours, Tennell said.
Tennell told 24 Hour News 8, “It was cold; it had rained all night. With the way the land lays, the water from the whole field was running right through the car, but he was alert enough to get himself situated.”
Emergency crews were finally called to Progress Parkway and Amos Road at about 5:55 a.m. Thursday, Tennell said.
Tennell says the man saved his own life that night, “Had he been unconscious from the crash, there's a good chance he might have drowned, but he was alert, and basically able to save himself from drowning in the car.”
Foster was awake and alert when emergency crews found him, and he was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by ambulance. He was in fair condition there Friday night.
