SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Police said a 6-year-old in Shelbyville was arrested after threatening and kicking his principal.
It was last week when officials from Hendricks Elementary School in Shelbyville called police when the boy became violent shortly after returning from a suspension, according to the police report. Officers arrested the boy and drove him to the police department, where he waited until his parents picked him up.
The boy had originally been suspended from school for hitting and biting school employees, the report said. In the more recent incident on April 18, school officials told police the boy threatened to kill the principal and assistant principal, and they also said he kicked the principal.
Officers took the boy from the school in a police car but did not handcuff him. He was preliminarily charged with battery and intimidation and was released to his parents.
“Getting them involved was in hopes to make the situation better, and not to have a punitive situation,” said Principal Pat Lumbley.
The incident had at least one parent upset.
“For this to happen in the school system, I worry about my daughter’s safety,” said Jennifer Michaels.
Shelbyville Police released the information on Wednesday. The report comes on the heels of a 12-year-old Indianapolis student arrested after police said he punched and pushed a teacher.
Currently there is a school discpline law that gives teachers certain protections from unruly students and parents. The law also protects school employees from possible lawsuits.
