BROOKVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - The Franklin County Sherriff’s Department is investigating a drowning in the Whitewater River just south of US 52 and SR 1.

According to Indiana Conservation Officer Gary Catron, officers were dispatched to the Whitewater River area near the State Road 1 bridge around 1 p.m. today after receiving a call about the incident.

A Cincinnati teen and her friends and family were rafting on the river when they got out of the boat to swim. The 15-year-old went under water and never resurfaced. 9 agencies searched the river for the teen. She was pulled from the water around 2:40 p.m.

The victim has been identified as Shontel L. Wagoner-Dugar of Cincinnati.

Catron warns that even though water levels are low, there is still a strong current people should be aware of.
