Armed suspect identified in Shelbyville shooting

SHELBYVILLE, IND (WISH) - The armed suspect in the Shelbyville shooting has been identified.

He is 22-year-old Lyman Dawson of Shelbyville.

Investigators have confirmed that Dawson did fire at least one shot at officers in this incident which began around 10:50 Saturday evening. 

Officers say this began when Dawson was interrupted while attempting to break into a parked car at the Family Video store at the southwest corner of Colescott and Harrison Street.

After being interrupted, Dawson ran from the scene and followed the residents of the 1000 block of Colescott into their driveway as they were pulling their car into the drive.

Police say there was a verbal exchange between Dawson and he allegedly pulled a gun and started firing the weapon.

Dawson took off and allegedly broke into a home in the 700 block of Elm street, startling the residents.

He took off from the home and headed back toward Harrison Street, where he allegedly shot Ryan Rooks.

Rooks told officers that he yelled at Dawson, asking him what the noise was about.

That's when police say Dawson raised the gun and shot Rooks in the leg.

Dawson ran from that scene and broke into the basement of another home in the 700 hundred block of Harrison Street.

He took off from the Harrison street home and was met by three Shelbyville police officers and that's when police say he opened fire shooting at the officers.

Dawson was shot and was taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

As of 2 p.m. Sunday, crime scene processing has been completed and all areas related to the multiple scene investigation were reopened to the public around 1 p.m.
