MUNCIE, Ind. (WISH) - Police in Muncie are investigating a shooting near the Ball State University campus that left two city police officers injured and a man described as a suspect dead.

Indiana State Police, issuing information on behalf of Muncie Police Department, said two officers were shot at about 2 p.m. Friday as they pulled into the parking lot of a Village Pantry on University Boulevard, part of an ongoing investigation.

The officers were in an unmarked Chevrolet Suburban, and a marked police car was also on the scene, police said. As they pulled into the parking lot, a man who had backed his Pontiac Bonneville into a parking space at the business began firing out his windshield at the Suburban, police said.

The driver of the Suburban, Officer Brent Brown, a 10-year veteran of the department, was hit in the shoulder. His bulletproof vest stopped the round, and he was treated at the scene and released. The other officer in the SUV, Officer Steve Baugh, who was in full police uniform at the time, was shot in the face, police said. He was taken by EMS to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where he was in stable condition Friday evening.

The officers returned fire, and the suspect, who has yet to be ID'd, was struck several times, police said. He was pronounced dead later at Ball Memorial Hospital, police said.

Area residents stood outside as officers processed the scene, and some said they heard as many as eight to 10shots.

“I woke up to gun shots, and my roommate started screaming, 'They are shooting,' and we all ran outside, said Kyle Carmichael.

The incident had him worried.

“It is a little frightening. This is my neighborhood. This is where I live. I’m at the gas station five times a day, and all of my neighbors are bit concerned,” Carmichael said.
