CONNERSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Two-year-old Wyatt Fasbinder was playing with his twin sister and their 5-year-old brother in their parents' upstairs bedroom when Wyatt was shot Thursday night .
"[The gun used] was in a gun case, but it wasn't secured, it wasn't locked," Connersville Police Chief David Counceller said.
Wyatt is one of five Hoosier children either injured or killed by gunfire since April in central Indiana.
Police said the 5-year-old doesn't grasp what happened.
"He's very articulate, but as a 5-year-old, he has a child's mentality to the point he doesn't understand the gravity of the situation," Det. Frank Jackson said.
The children's mother watched as the Department of Child Services interviewed her oldest about what happened.
"[The] mother watched from an adjoining room to monitor, to reassure herself that he was OK," Jackson said.
This tragedy was felt all over the small Fayette County town, and there was one common question from police and neighbors: Why wasn't the gun locked up?
"People need to be aware to lock their guns up, especially when they have children in their home," neighbor Lisa Terry said.
Counceller said kids are exposed to guns in so many situations that they don't understand how dangerous they really are.
"There's so much stuff on TV anymore. And even toy guns anymore, they all function just like a real gun," he said.
Police and DCS are still investigating the shooting. They have not decided yet if charges will be filed against the children's mother, Jamie McGinnis, or father, Chad Fasbinder.
