School district tightens rules for early graduates

TRAFALGAR, Ind. (AP) - Students in a Johnson County school district who want to graduate high school early with a general diploma will have to complete more math, science and social studies classes.
The Daily Journal reports the Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson district had 28 students graduate mid-year this year. Most earned a general diploma that requires fewer classes than Core 40 and academic honors diplomas.
Superintendent Matt Prusiecki says he decided to require more credits for early graduates out of concern that those students would lack math and reading skills needed to enter college or the workforce.
Prusiecki says rising college standards mean students who cut their time in high school short even by a semester are limiting the amount of time they have to show prospective universities that they've taken difficult, college-level courses.
