Shelby Co. approves more courthouse security

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Visitors to the Shelby County Courthouse in Shelbyville soon will face more security measures.
The Shelby County Council this week approved spending $272,000 for X-ray machines, metal detectors, mores camera and improvements to a vestibule to accommodate the changes.
The Shelbyville News reports Shelby Circuit Judge Charles O'Connor led the effort for the changes. He says people coming before his bench often have little respect for the law, authority or the system. He says there's currently little security to stop angry people in the courthouse for criminal hearings, custody battles, protective orders or similar hearings from harming each other.
Shelby County will join a number of other Indiana counties in installing scanners and metal detectors at courthouse entrances.
Shelbyville is about 20 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
