ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) - Police have arrested a suspect in Sunday's fatal stabbing of an Anderson man, 24-Hour News 8's news partner The Herald Bulletin reports.

Adam E. Layne, 26, of Anderson turned himself in for questioning on Monday.

Layne was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder while his girlfriend, 25-year-old Sarah D. Smith was arrested on a preliminary charge of assisting a criminal.

Police say Layne stabbed 23-year-old Willie Rumph during an altercation in Layne's home in the 1600 block of Lincoln Street.

Anderson Police Sgt. Bill Casey said Rumph suffered multiple stab wounds to his sides and drove himself to nearby Saint John's Medical Center. An off-duty police officer working security found Rumph outside the emergency room covered in blood.

Rumph died in surgery at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after being transported via ambulance from St. John's.

Rumph had given police information which led them to search the 1600 block of Lincoln Street where police found blood along the sidewalk leading up to the front porch of Layne's house.

Police are still searching for a key witness in the case.
