Teachers hope Ritz will slow school changes

RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) -  Indiana teachers say they hope the state's newly elected schools chief will be able to slow the pace of education change enacted under Republican Tony Bennett, but they don't expect it to stop entirely.

Democrat Glenda Ritz defeated Bennett in the Nov. 6 election with a grassroots campaign that contended Bennett has moved too fast.

The changes under Bennett include an expansive school voucher program, a state takeover of six schools and moves to tie teacher pay to student performance.

Many educators say Ritz will be a welcome voice at the Statehouse. But Richmond Community Schools Superintendent Allen Bourff tells the Palladium-Item he doesn't expect the Democrat will be able to stop the change with a Republican governor and Legislature.
