The Carmel community is grieving over the loss of two high school teenagers. The two were killed in a crash Friday night just south of 146th street on River Road. Police have not released the victims names. However, sources within the Carmel High School community identify them as Jordan Moss and Jordan Poirier. A Facebook memorial page has been set up for them.
Carmel police say it all started when an officer tried to pull-over a driver for speeding near 126th and River Road.
"The officer attempted to stop them for that. The vehicle took off..and subsequently on to the golf course..then off the golf course, back on River Road and just south of 146th Street just lost control and they hit the pole," explained Assist. Chief Tim Green.
The vehicle, an SUV burst into flames on impact. Some of the neighbors heard the impact. One dialed into the local scanner traffic and listened.
"They gradually moved closer to the scene and you could hear the fire captain come up and say "knock that down..we need to get the rescue team in there," Larry McElhiney.
Police say the driver managed to escape but the two 15 year old boys died after being trapped inside the burning car.
Green says the fire was just too hot.
Officers attempted to get to the vehicle but the flames were too hot and they weren't able to get up there," said Green.
Investigators talked briefly to the driver at the hospital Friday night. They plan on talking to him again to learn more about how the teens got the car and where they were headed when the accident occurred.
"Just to think of the impact on those kids...certainly two of them passed away, they died, but the families and the third youngster. he is going to have to live with that terrible tragedy for a long time to come," said Carmel Police Chief Michael Fogarty.
A vigil is planned for Sunday night.
