NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Two Hamilton County sisters are recovering after they were rescued from a frozen lake. The girls were rescued behind a house on Willow Court at Morse Reservoir. What was supposed to be fun day outside, turned into a dramatic rescue from a frozen lake.
"I was in my driveway and I ran down that fence line," said Aubrey Peters. Aubrey showed 24 Hour News 8 where she noticed her young neighbors in the water. Just after 4 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Aubrey heard the 4 and 7-year-olds screaming for help.
"It was terrifying. I mean it was like watching someone die and I hated it," Aubrey said.
Aubrey said she rushed inside to alert her grandparents. "I screamed to my grandparents.. Emergency, Emergency.. kids are drowning!" She then called 911.
"God definitely was with us all - or we never would have never even seen them," said Joyce Peters. By the time Peters got near the girls, the 7-year-old was crawling to safety on top of the ice. The girl's sister was still underneath the frozen water.
Aubrey's grandmother jumped in the water and rescued the 4-year-old girl. "I knew I had no option, but to get in and get her. So, I jumped in the lake and I had to kind of break up the ice a little bit to get her, but it was for a very short distance. I got her, and in the interim, my husband came down the hill," said Peters.
Joyce's husband performed CPR on the 4-year-old girl until medics arrived. Investigators said she was alert and conscious.
"We are all very lucky because it would have been a tragedy, a major tragedy for our neighborhood and for our city. So we're very thankful both girls are okay," said Peters.
The Noblesville Fire Department says both are in stable condition and will continue to be treated at Riverview Hospital.
