FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Carmel Police have identified a man who led them on a high speed chase through the streets of Carmel and Fishers Thursday night. At one point, officers say the man tried to hit an officer with his truck and the officer responded by opening fire.

According to police, the incident started Thursday evening when 60-year-old William Refkin, of Indianapolis, was wanted for stealing from a Carmel Meijer store. Police tried to pull over Refkin but he refused.

Officers say the chase turned extremely dangerous in front of the Woodland Country Club at 116th and Rangeline. That's where Refkin, after trying to lose police by driving on the golf course, nearly ran over an officer. That officer then fired four shots at Refkin's truck, police say.

The chase lasted for several miles and finally ended when Refkin crashed his red, Ford F-150 on 116th Street near Hoosier Road in Fishers.

Firefighters had to remove Refkin from the truck. Police say he's in stable condition at Methodist Hospital.

Refkin faces several charges including theft, resisting law enforcement, criminal mischief and criminal recklessness, police say.

Carmel Police Chases

This is the second time this year Carmel police have been involved in a chase that ended in a crash. Back in April, Carmel police chased a car that crashed along River Road just south of 146th Street.

Three 15-year-olds were in the car and two of them died in the crash.

Carmel's police chief said after the crash officers involved in the chase were in compliance with policies.
