CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) - Carmel has not placed restrictions on its water customers. But the city’s water utility has made one change. It's not softening the city's water as often as it would under normal conditions.
The softening process takes hundreds of gallons of water out of the system every minute, and that water gets sent down the drain. Suspending the process at peak times now, makes sure more water is available for customers.
Without softening, though, those customers might see a film on their dishes. We're told a dishwasher additive should solve that problem.
During one dry period last summer, Carmel stopped softening for nine days. But Sue Maki, manager of customer relations and education, said with a new water plant fully online, the utility is meeting its demand.
However, she encourages customers to use water wisely.
