Child left during day care field trip

Parents are demanding action from the provider

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - A 5-year-old was left in a public park while on a day care field trip. His parents are demanding action from the provider who, they say, has done little more than say "I'm sorry."

It's normal weeknight activities for 5-year-old Lucas Murray and his family but the normal is no longer taken for granted.

"Anything could have happened. So we're just fortunate to have him still with us," said Lucas' mother, Shelly Murray.

It was the call Shelly Murray wasn't expecting last week. AYS daycare said her son Lucas and another child were left at a public park during a field trip. They were found by strangers who called police.

"All I kept saying is, 'You have him. You have him.' And they said, 'Yes, we have him.'"

It was at Dillon Park in Noblesville where Lucas and another child were found unattended. Thankfully, they were found. Lucas' parents don't even like to think about what could have happened.

"The park is on 146th Street. A 5-year-old panics about a lot of stuff. They try to run across the street cause, hey I think I see them across the street," said Lucas' father, Allen Murray.

The AYS denied a request for an interview and instead released a statement saying, in part, that "AYS is looking into the incident, and at this time our investigation is not complete. We are glad everyone is safe."

Lucas' parents received a letter from AYS and were told those in charge would receive reprimands in their files and that additional training would be given.

For Allen and Shelly Murray, that's not enough.

"I think those people need to be fired because this is saying, 'Ok, we can leave a kid and nothing is going to happen to us. We're going to get additional training,'" said Shelly Murray.
