WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) - Indiana has the second largest population in the country of those living with Huntington's Disease. One Indiana family is caring for a loved one suffering from the disease, and they're raising money and awareness for the cause.
April Hendricks, 34, suffers from the neurodegenerative genetic disorder. The mother of two is left crippled and is being cared for in a nursing home.
Her brother works at the Westfield Kroger, and when store employees heard April's story, they stepped in to sponsor an event.
April's father knows what the disease can do, and he wants to do what he can to find a cure.
"I've had two granddaughters who have a 50/50 shot of getting this," he said. "April's mother passed away at the age of 41 and I was blessed at getting to raise my daughter. I'm very proud of her and she's my hero in a lot of ways."
The family along with the Huntington’s Disease Society of America is hosting a walk to support the cause. Team Hope Walk for HD is in Tipton on October 23.
