NOBLESVILLE Ind. (WISH) - When it comes to fighting a fire, every second counts.
With that in mind, the city of Noblesville announced a $375 thousand plan to retrofit nearly a thousand fire hydrants. They will be replaced with Storz-type quick connect hydrant nozzles that will improve response times for local firefighters.
"We've conducted a study where we believe it will reduce about 25 seconds off our time necessary to establish a water supply," says Noblesville fire chief Ken Gilliam. "25 seconds may not seem like a long time, but in a working fire, it's very significant and can have a dramatic impact on the outcome of the fire."
Noblesville passed an ordinance in 2003, specifying Storz connectors be included on all new hydrant installations in the city. Around 560 hydrants have already been updated.
