Fishers mom arrested after toddlers wander blocks away

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Two wandering children without diapers led Fishers Police to arrest a mother Tuesday morning.

A resident in the 13100 block of Knollwood Place noticed two toddlers wandering near her home without supervision. She brought them into her home, put diapers on them and called police.

The children couldn’t tell police where they lived, because they were so young. The discovery of the children prompted a neighborhood search by officers and neighbors. After an hour, someone recognized the children and their mother was found.

Police say the children had wandered several blocks from their home, which is on Buffett Parkway. Officers found their mother, 23-year-old Sarah Martin, in possession of marijuana and Adderall, a prescription used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Martin reportedly told police she fell asleep and wasn’t aware the children left until officers woke her.

A relative took custody of the children. Martin was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony; possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony; and possession of marijuana, a Class A misdemeanor.
