FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Fishers voters decided Tuesday night that the town should become a city where they can elect their own mayor and district council members. The decision is final, but it will take years before the change takes place.
“There's going to have to be some plans to lay out but we have a little bit of time to figure that out and I'm confident we will be proactive and make sure it is as seamless as possible,” said Town Manager Scott Fadness.
Becoming a city means there will be more elected officials. Three councilors will be added, plus, the mayor's position. Candidates have to be given time to campaign.
The current Fishers Town Council will determine by adoption of an ordinance whether the election of new officials occurs during the November 2014 General Election or November 2015 Municipal Election. That means the Town of Fishers will officially become the City of Fishers on either January 1, 2015, or January 1, 2016.
“I'm just going to wait and see. And if it turns out for a better city, than I'm all for it,” said resident Sheryl Hill.
The other major change that needs to take place is a cosmetic change. The word "town" will have to be replaced with “city” on numerous signs and city vehicles.
