WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) - Westfield firefighters were called to the 3900 block of Chancellors Court Saturday in response to a gas leak that caused an evacuation of nearby homes.

A contractor reportedly struck a 2-inch gas main on a home that was under construction.

Firefighters immediately shut down access to the road and evacuated homes for safety.

Vectren Gas arrived to the scene after firefighters monitored the leak and air quality. Additional crews arrived to the scene within two hours and corrected the problem, according to a release.

Residents were allowed back in their homes and the roadway was reopened.
