CICERO, Ind. (WISH) - Hamilton County will be looking for homes for cats, after 20 were removed from a home in Cicero Monday morning.
The Humane Society for Hamilton County helped remove the cats from an elderly man’s mobile home. He had to go to a nursing home after becoming ill.
“Hoarding situations like this are often the result of a well-intentioned person with a very big heart,” said Rebecca Stevens executive director of the Humane Society. “Unfortunately, it can get out of hand very quickly, and the result here is far too many cats living in a small space who have not received proper care.”
One of the cats had to be euthanized because of a skin infection covering 75 percent of its body. Another three cats are pregnant. All of the cats are frightened and not ready for adoption just yet. But, the humane society is seeking help finding homes for other animals at their facility so the seized animals have a better chance of survival.
“We operate at capacity every day,” said Stevens. “When you have 20 or more animals arrive at one time, it’s paralyzing."
