FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Lantern Road was closed between 116th Street and Fishers Elementary School for most of Monday due to an underground gas leak.

Fishers fire officials say a passing motorist smelled gas around 12:15  am and called 911. Fishers Firefighters and Vectren representatives determined a small leak was seeping up from underground.

As of noon, crews had stopped the leak, but the road was still closed while repairs were made and the line was buried. Officials projected the road would be open around 5 p.m. Traffic on Lantern Road is being diverted at 116th Street.

No evacuations were deemed necessary. Vectren officials said the leak was small and not a hazard to the school or homes in the area.

A fire spokesperson reports the gas line in question is a 3 inch gas main.
