Noblesville school acts on measles report

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) - Noblesville schools have taken steps to protect students at Noblesville Intermediate School after learning that a student is exhibiting measles symptoms.

In a statement released Monday night, the school system noted the case has not been confirmed by a physician, and the child has been kept home from school and cannot return until school and state Health Department guidelines are met. All areas of the school have been thoroughly cleaned to help prevent the spread of the virus, the school system said.

"We do have a very, very small population of students that do not have the measles vaccination. We are going through our database and we’re going to call each one of those parents individually and make sure to remind them it's something they need to have,” Director of Student Service Mark Booth told 24-Hour News 8 Anchor Erin Murphy.

It was unclear whether the Noblesville case was among 10 confirmed cases reported Monday by the state Health Department .

"The 10 cases may turn into more. We understand that there’s a probability there will even be additional cases that we have to identify those individuals, voluntarily quarantine them so they don't spread to others," State Health Commissioner Dr. Gregory Larkin said.

Vaccination is the best way to avoid contracting measles, a highly contagious disease. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough and a rash all over the body. Anyone who believes they or a family member may have measles should contact their family physician.
