Residents call about natural gas odor

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Officials with Hamilton County Fire Control say they have received dozens of calls over the past few hours from concerned residents saying they smelled natural gas.

Fire control members say a station in Westfield was filling tanks with a solution Thursday called Mercaptan. This creates a rotten egg smell in natural gas.

One tank was over filled at the location on 156th Street and US 31.

Vectren arrived to the scene to burn off the excess chemical. The smell was drifting southward from Westfield toward Carmel, officials say.
