Sources: Carmel HS seniors to face misdemeanor charges

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) - I-Team 8 has been told by several sources that the Carmel High School seniors accused of sexually assaulting a freshman on the basketball team bus will be charged with misdemeanor and not felony charges.

The charges will be announced at a joint press conference by the two prosecutors from Hamilton and Hendricks counties.

The seniors will turn themselves into Hamilton County authorities sometime after the charges are announced on Monday, the sources say.

The case went to a grand jury and Hamilton County is awaiting a few more signatures from grand jury members before charges are filed.

Also expected on Monday, the Carmel Clay School Board says it will look at a new anti-hazing policy.

The policy reads, "Hazing shall be defined for purposes of this policy as performing any act or coercing another, including the victim, to perform any act of initiation into any class, group or organization that causes or creates a risk of causing mental, emotional or physical harm. Permission, consent or assumption of risk by an individual subjected to hazing shall not lessen the prohibitions contained in this policy."
