FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) - Just days before the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, a fire at the Target in Fishers brought fire crews to the store Tuesday morning and forced customers and employees to evacuate.
The fire broke out in the rear of the building at 11750 Commercial Drive, near 116th Street and Commercial Drive, said Ron Lipps, Fishers Fire Department spokesman.
Target reopened around 1 p.m., but the grocery section remained closed while the store finished cleanup and assessing damaged stock.
It appeared the fire started when contractors were using a torch to repair a cardboard baler, Lipps said. A single fire sprinkler head above the area contained the fire, Lipps said, but the fire produced a lot of smoke in the store.
Fishers Fire Department commended employees for enacting the store's emergency evacuation plan and getting customers out of the store.
One firefighter suffered slight injury during cleanup, Lipps said.
