CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) - A major project is complete and traffic is flowing freely at a busy Carmel intersection, just in time for holiday shopping season.
All ramps and traffic lanes at the new U.S. 31 interchange with 146th Street and Keystone Parkway are now open, the Indiana Department of Transportation said, though some temporary lane restrictions may be necessary after the holiday weekend to allow for finishing touches.
Crews worked over the weekend to complete the $35 million project.
Each direction of U.S. 31 now has three freeway-style travel lanes on new pavement between Greyhound Pass and the Monon Trail overpass. The ramp system was made more efficient, and six new bridges were constructed.
The project was part of a Major Moves program to upgrade or bypass congested sections of U.S. 31 (which stretches from Michigan to Alabama) between Indianapolis and South Bend.
