CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) - Thanks to Carmel’s long-term water master plan, 24 wells and four treatment plants, the city currently has an adequate water supply. But, Carmel Utilities is asking that customers voluntarily conserve water.
It may be months until Indiana sees any improvements in the drought situation, and as a result water utilities may need to work together to make sure there is enough water for domestic purposes and fire protection, the City of Carmel says.
A new water treatment facility located at 106th Street and Gray Road reportedly has the capacity of processing 12 million gallons of water each day. The facility has allowed Carmel Utilities to meet the largest demand for water the area has ever had.
The facility and two new wells were completed and added to the system in the past month as part of Carmel’s planned expansion that started back in 2008.
The plant and other facilities have been operating at levels that have never been seen before because of the drought conditions.
Carmel is currently able to meet the current demand but it is unknown as to how long the drought will last or what the needs for the plant and the needs for the surrounding communities will be.
The request for this voluntary conservation is so the city continues to meet customer demands and continues to conserve resources for current and future regional needs.
