WESTFIELD, Ind. (WISH) - The Westfield Public Works Department is reminding residents that the biannual fire hydrant flushing begins Sunday. Residents should be aware of flushing in their respective areas and that water may be temporarily discolored.

Hydrant flushing is required periodically to clean out the water main system and make sure all residents have the cleanest water possible.

Flushing takes place between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Residents are asked to minimize water usage during these times to minimize the chance of using dirty water.

Residents should not cook or do laundry during this time.

"We are asking the residents to be patient and cooperate with us during this process," says Kurt Wanninger, Director of Public Works. "If customers see a discoloration in their water, we would ask them to let the water run to waste at maximum volume for approximately two to three minutes, or until the discoloration disappears. It is imperative that this process occur so that our residents receive only the best quality water," says Wanninger.

For more information on the hydrant maintenance, please call the WPW at 317-804-3150.
