INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - It was an emotional day as 13-year-old Jarrell Tucker was laid to rest.
Glenn Beard is being charged with his murder after police say he shot Jarrell Tucker in the back of the head. Loved ones at the wake on Saturday at Barnes United Methodist Church say what happened to Jarrell was unjust.
“I want people to know what a wonderful young man he was," says Jarrell’s Grandmother Vernell Miller. "He was still a baby, hadn't lived his life yet."
The violent death of 13-year-old Jarrell Tucker has sent shockwaves through the community.
"I hate it for the city because he could have been one of our nation's next leaders in this community and we'll never know. The violence like this have to stop,” says Olgen Williams the Deputy Mayor of Neighborhoods.
On Saturday loved ones, family, friends and community leaders said their last goodbyes.
“We're just here to send our family member home send my grandson home and deal with this tragedy. A lot of people are coming out to support us, support him say goodbye,” says Miller.
The shooting happened Aug. 6. Police say Glenn Beard shot Jarrell Tucker in the back of the head, killing him. In the probable cause affidavit witnesses say Tucker and a friend were trying to rob Glenn Beard's brother.
Jarrell's grandmother says that's a lie.
“You have a racist, a well known racist in the community, who shot this baby in the back of his head for nothing,” Miller said.
Jarrell's family says he was innocent and didn't deserve to die. They want to see Glenn Beard pay for the crime.
“He didn't rob anybody, he didn't assault anybody, he didn't have a gun," Miller said. "He was walking down the alley going home and this man called him that dreaded n word, punched him in the face, and later shot him in the head."
The probable cause does say Beard confronted Jarrell and his friend. Beard then punched Tucker. The report goes on to state the 13-year-old threw a brick at Beard's brother's car. That's when witnesses say Beard got his gun and shots were fired.
Glenn Beard pleaded not guilty. He is charged with murder and a felon possessing a gun. His next court appearance is set for early October.
Vernell Miller says Jarrell Tucker was an organ donor.
