18 laptops disappear from Indy high school

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - More than a dozen computers are missing from one Indianapolis high school.

Broad Ripple High School leaders say the disappearance doesn't compute.

Indianapolis Public Schools doesn't know if the computers were stolen or if someone misplaced them. IPS Chief of Police Steve Garner says it’s troubling because this isn't the first time it's happened.

A teacher at the high school returned from fall break and noticed at least 18 laptops once secured in a cart with a combination lock were gone.

In the coming days the school plans to look at two weeks worth of surveillance video to see if a thief swiped the computers worth thousands of dollars.

“IPS has the opportunity to issue (laptops) to some students,” Garner said. “They can take them home with them. We have layers or tiers of which they could come up missing.”

Garner also said two students were recently bragging about how easy it would be to steal computers from the school and pawn. IPS checked local pawn shops for the laptops but found none of the ones missing.
