2013 budget battle continues Monday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - At a public meeting scheduled for Monday night, the City-County Council will continue its battle over a $65 million hole in the 2013 budget.

Mayor Ballard’s original proposal was unveiled in August.

To close the budget gap, his proposal calls for:

-Taking $17 million from the Rainy Day Fund

-Taking $10 million from a downtown economic development fund

-Using $20 million in money budgeted for, but not spent by, other departments

-Saving $8.1 million by eliminating the local homestead tax credit (This currently saves property tax payers about $24 per year.)

-Cutting raises, overtime and recruiting for both IMPD & IFD

The mayor said the city is taking in less money because of property tax caps and a higher unemployment rate, meaning less income tax revenue.

Monday’s meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the City-County Building.

A final vote is scheduled for October 15.
