INDIANAPOLIS, IN.(WISH) - Police are investigating a shooting that has killed one person and injured five others early Tuesday morning.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were first called to a report of a woman in distress at about 12:30 a.m. near  21st Street and Historic Oaks Boulevard, on the far west side, west of Girls School Road. Officers found a 21-year-old black woman in a Chrysler Sebring suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

As officers were tending to her, a Pontiac Grand Am drove up to them with a 20-year-old black woman also suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg, as well as additional injuries from being hit by a vehicle.

Then, as medics were responding to the scene, they found a third victim, a 21-year-old black woman, at a nearby baseball diamond at Ben Davis Park, in the 7400 block of West 21st Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

All three of those people were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, IMPD said.

Then, shortly after 1 a.m., police got a call that there were two people shot in the 6000 block of Westhaven Drive, north of 38th Street, east of High School Road. When officers arrived, they found an unidentified black female fatally shot. A 21-year-old black man was also shot in the leg. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, and IMPD said he is considered a person of interest in the case at this time.

At around the same time, another person shot in the hand and foot walked into IU West Hospital in Hendricks County.

Speedway Police also detained a man running east on 21st Street, after medics and officers responding to the shooting saw him fleeing, IMPD said. Other people were detained as they ran north on Girls School Road. A vehicle leaving the scene on 10th Street was also stopped, and several people inside were detained. All were being interviewed by officers Tuesday morning.

Investigators believe all the shootings happened at the ball diamond on 10th Street, where one of the victims was found. IMPD said a group of girls gathered there to fight.

Anyone with information should call IMPD Homicide at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous, and Information that leads to felony arrest may be eligible for cash reward.

Police were releasing no identities as of Monday morning, but the mother of the 20-year-old woman shot and hit by a vehicle identified her as Sanash Brewer. She said her daughter was headed into surgery Monday morning at IU Health Methodist Hospital.
