INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Race fans have been busy gearing up for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. This year they had the opportunity to check out the driver's race cars on the track and see out what's available for regular drivers at a Chevrolet event. The event will hopefully help an automotive company as it emerges from bankruptcy.
Brad Davis got his picture taken with a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. He said if he gets his job back he'll buy one.
Davis was laid off from a General Motors Chevy Colbalt plant in January. But his loyalty to GM is strong. He said events like The Chevy Ride and Drive Opportunity could help Chevy sales.
"If they start selling more of these Cobalts, then we will go back to work," Davis said.
"What's important for any of us in the car industry is the opportunity bring our product to the consumer and the great thing about race fans is they are automotive enthusiasts," explained Terry Dolan, Manager of Chevy Racing.
Chevrolet and Nascar go hand in hand. The company has had a relationship with IMS since the inception of the Brickyard.
"Doesn't get any better than Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, (Dale Earnhardt) Junior," said Chris Owen, Assistant Director UAW and GM Center for Human Resources.
Since GM emerged from bankruptcy execs have promised better cars, a new corporate culture, and an improved focus on the customer.
At the Ride and Drive event Chevy can easily attract their target audience.
"Gives us a chance to show off the vehicles. We talk about the U.S. content. What it takes to make these great GM's Chevy's we got out here. Hopefully get us back on market and get us back to work," Owen said.
Russell Kudela took a break from qualifications and "window shopped." He said he has his eye on this Chevy Equinox, ""I have four children, so 8 seats is really nice for me."
"Chevy's been around forever. I want to see it make it and I want a job," Davis said.
Gates at the track open Sunday morning at seven Pre-Race Ceremonies Begin 12:30 p.m. The 16th Allstate 400 at the Brickyard starts at two o'clock.
