INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis Public Schools board members are rethinking a rule banning students from riding in personal cars of employees.
Board members voted Monday to re-visit the rule after a fourth-grade teacher's job was threatened for picking up students and transporting them to her house for tutoring lessons.
The policy was implemented last year in reaction to the death of an IPS student who was killed in a car accident while riding with a school employee. Many on the board, including board member Andrea Roof, said the rule is too vague.
“There is a lot of questions on that. A lot of teachers and staff members obviously did not understand, and quite honestly the board really did not know our intent after we put it out there," she said. "So we just really need to finer-point the guidelines,".
The board also gave permission for the superintendent to rehire other teachers who were terminated for violating the rule.
